Billing and Insurance
I don't currently accept insurance, but I can provide documentation if clients wish to submit to an insurance company for "out of network" benefit coverage
Fees: I offer a free half-hour consultation, by phone or in person depending on my schedule. After that, the charge for an initial interview (approximately 80-90 minutes in length) is $180 and the charge for a regular, 50-minute session is $120. Any overtime, coordination with other care providers, or lengthy correspondence is charged at the rate of $120/hour (prorated for time actually used).
I accept all credit cards, cash, and checks.

I work with people who feel like they don't fit into the world or who feel like nobody understands them. Sometimes this is because they are experiencing ADHD, mood instability or anxiety; other times, they are facing difficult life stresses or transitions, such as the losses of relationships or job changes. Fifteen years as a university professor has made me especially attuned to the issues of the teenage and young adult years. I also feel compelled to work with gifted or twice-exceptional (gifted plus another exceptionality) clients who (despite stereotypes) face unique challenges issues in a society built for "normal". In all of these situations--preteens through older, gifted clients--issues of identity are usually central to our sessions.

More Info About My Practice
The most important part of the therapeutic relationship is the bond between the therapist and client. Therefore, I offer a free half-hour initial consultation (either by phone or in person, depending on my schedule) so that you can assess whether I am the best person to help you.
My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy
Clients have different goals for seeking help. Some have concrete goals, such as curbing procrastination or improving academic performance; others struggle with broader issues, such as finding meaning in life, difficulty in sustaining rewarding relationships, or continuing to grow. At other times, the reason that people becomes clear only after time and may change over the course of working together. I believe that people inherently strive toward growth and healthy functioning, so no matter why you seek help, I see my role as supporting you in achieving the positive, healthy goals that you desire.
What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist
I view people as geodes, beautiful crystal formations hidden under rocky exteriors. Often I can see the crystal within before they do, but I love the moments in which they can see their beautify. I love to help them dust off that outside rocky exterior so that they can shine. I love to watch people grow, often in front of my eyes, as they have sudden realizations about themselves or how to handle their situations. I love to see people achieving their dreams, whether they are new careers or relationships or understandings.
And, as difficult as it may be for me when clients leave, I love it when they leave because they have achieved all they wanted to with me and are ready to fly on their own.
How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist
I strongly believe that those people who have faced and walked (or crawled) through their own "dark nights of the soul" are better able to hold out hope for others in similar situations. I have faced many dark nights of my soul, and I have allowed--sometimes even made--myself feel the pain of those situations, in order that I can better serve my clients. I will not tell you that there is a reason for your pain. What I can do is to help you *make* meaning from your pain and to grow from them.
