My warm and eclectic therapeutic approach occurs within the context of transpersonal psychology. Transpersonal psychology blends a range of spiritual traditions with contemporary psychotherapy to more deeply explore the human experience. I embrace the transpersonal tenets of compassion and unconditional acceptance, along with the belief that we all have a drive toward wholeness and health. I use a strength-based approach that focuses on wellness and stability, not pathology.
Though I see things through a transpersonal lens, I also draw wisdom from Jungian, depth, contemplative, existential, Shamanic, feminist/relational, humanistic, and Buddhist psychologists, in addition to drawing from the mindfulness-based and body-centered Hakomi method. I use a variety of techniques in therapy, including dream work, mindfulness, expressive arts, body wisdom, ancestral work, energetic healing, and visualization.
Though some of my clients prefer traditional talk therapy, many are curious about art, perhaps expressing an apprehensive interest in artistic endeavors. You are not required to make art. But because art has always played a major role in my own personal growth, I understand its healing capacity firsthand. Therefore, I'm passionate about inviting clients to embrace the profound, gentle power of art even, and perhaps especially, if they have not touched artistic materials since grade school.
To me, art therapy is simply the use of art to express your inner world, so you can more deeply explore, transform, and integrate the various parts of yourself. Art allows us to bring concrete form and structure to previously unseen emotions. I do not know more than you about your own art. But as an art therapist, I nurture meaning and insights about your art, helping you to access and honor your unique inner wisdom.
The adult intellect is remarkably adept at sticking to old patterns, even when they keep you stuck, when communicating only verbally. Art moves beyond verbal defenses, allowing you to find insight more quickly, in a non-threatening environment. Working with artistic materials alongside an art therapist allows you to reflect on the creative process, cultivate self-awareness, better manage symptoms, and enjoy the affirming experience of creating something.
