My Approach to Helping
As a pediatric health care provider I specialize in diagnosing addressing neurologic issues which may impact a child's level of functioning and overall potential. My approach is family based and involves taking an in depth history, carefully listening to the patient and their family and performing a thorough general and neurologic examination. While I do not claim to be a traditional mental health therapist I do spend a great deal of time educating and empowering my patients and their respective families about their diagnosis. Since the vast majority of neurologic diseases have psychological and psychiatric comorbidities I pay particular attention for their presence in my patients. More often then not I find my patients need further evaluation and treatment with a certified counselor or psychologist and therefore include this recommendation/referral as part of their overall treatment plan. My training, experience, board qualifications and maintenance of continuing medical education credits allows me to manage any needed psychiatric (medication) needs of my patients as well provide for their ongoing neurologic care. I make a concerted effort to limit the need for psychotropic medications and incorporate them only when all parties (parents, patient and me) are in agreement with it.
