Most of us want happy, loving relationships and a satisfying sex life. So why do so many of us struggle with achieving these goals? My interest in becoming a psychotherapist is deeply rooted in my innate curiosity about the mystery and nature of our intimate connections. For example, why are we attracted to the people we are attracted to? Are relationships meant to last forever? Can we love more than one person at a time? What does it mean to be a "good" mother? Why does it hurt so much when our partner doesn't listen, understand, agree or help enough? Is it normal to miss your independence and freedom when you're a new mom? Why does passion seem to fade in long-term relationships? Can affairs really make relationships stronger? Why do we sometimes stay in bad relationships? If sex is supposed to be "natural," why can it become such a source of stress? Is it okay to have negative feelings about being a mom? Why can it be so hard to talk to our partners about sex?

My psychotherapy practice reflects two distinct specialty areas. The first is devoted exclusively to all things sex and relationships - helping individuals and couples gain the insight and tools needed to tackle the things that get in the way of creating more fulfilling relationships and healthy sexual expression.

My second area of clinical expertise is Maternal Mental Health, which consists of helping women overcome Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders, PTSD & birth trauma, perinatal loss & bereavement, transition to motherhood, breastfeeding challenges, and more. This is an extremely rare specialty area in the Capital District, so please don't sell yourself short and settle for a therapist who may claim to have an interest in these areas (most therapists claim to "do it all") but who lacks the specialized training & experience required to assess, treat and care for women and moms who are struggling.

My approach to therapy is hopeful, warm, active/directive, affirming, and non-judgmental.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

Choosing a therapist is a pretty important decision and one not to be taken lightly. There are a lot of therapists in the Capital District, and there are just as many factors to consider when choosing a therapist - location; affordability; areas/level of expertise; and fit. And while I cannot guarantee fit with every client (or location), past clients have consistently described me as easy to talk to, professional, and worth paying out of pocket for. There are many benefits to paying out of pocket, you may not have even considered - added PRIVACY when dealing with sensitive issues (and not enduring the possible stigma of getting a mental health diagnosis on record when you may not have one, which is often what happens when you use your health insurance for couples therapy); more FLEXIBILITY with length of sessions and duration of treatment, ACCESSIBILITY of your therapist; and more.

What I Say to People Concerned about the Therapy Process

It is completely normal and expected to be nervous when talking to a therapist (essentially a stranger) for the first time, even more so when seeking the services of a sex therapist. Furthermore, most people don't know what to expect when consulting a sex therapist. Most people come in with a lot of anxiety and a lot of questions.

My initial goals as a therapist are to: quickly put you at ease, explain the process and what you can expect and instill hope that you are "normal", that things can improve, and that it is possible to get better and have more pleasure and love in life.
