My Approach to Helping

I am a psychoanalyst in private practice in San Francisco. I completed my psychoanalytic training with Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California and have trained in child and adolescent psychoanalysis through San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. In addition to my clinical work with patients, I also offer consultation for other clinicians and teach and supervise with various psychoanalytic sites in the Bay Area. My writing about the intersection between Buddhism and psychoanalysis has received awards from NCSPP, a local psychoanalytic organization, and APsaA, a national one. I can help guide you in the process of more clearly seeing and navigating your emotional landscape - why you might be prone to anger or worry, why accomplishments feel fleeting, or why things aren't working as you'd like interpersonally. Once we better understand the difficulties, I can also help you figure out what to do about them by making changes both on the inside as well in your external life. I bring a thoughtful, safe, and caring presence and invite you to speak your heart and mind freely, whether as an individual or a couple. I enjoy working with people who are interested in making more genuine contact with themselves and the important people in their lives and who seek an enhanced sense of vitality, creativity and self-esteem. I also see children ages 4 and older in play therapy.

More Info About My Practice

In addition to my training in clinical psychology, I hold a BA in Buddhist Studies from Columbia University and have practiced meditation extensively for over fifteen years. While I rarely bring this practice explicitly into sessions, its effects enhance my work. Meditation practice has trained me to sustain a focused, calm attention and a compassionate and curious attitude toward whatever arises in a session.
I also hold an MFA from Yale University and enjoy helping individuals discover an enhanced sense of creativity in their lives.

My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy

By working together, we will create a way for you to tackle patterns that are too challenging to understand on your own. We will work to address and ultimately change unsatisfying repetitive patterns so that you can be in more genuine contact with yourself and others and live with an enhanced sense of vitality and self esteem. Together we will understand the buried thoughts and feelings that created unsatisfying patterns and behaviors and help you move to a place of greater internal freedom.
