I am a mental health professional who has been working with a variety of populations and settings for the past 15 years. My aim in counseling is to provide a compassionate space that allows individuals and couples to share their story and to develop the resilience to overcome their struggles. I use compassion-focused counseling and adopt acceptance/mindfulness-based interventions that give people the capacity to live their values in spite of difficult circumstances. My focus goes beyond addressing symptoms and distress by encouraging individuals to find meaning and purpose within their life journey. It is within our own meaning and purpose that we can find the vitality to face our most difficult fears.

First sessions typically involve me learning about you and your story, and you getting to know me and my approach. The next few sessions usually focus on learning new skills and strategies to more effectively handle difficult thoughts, emotions and sensations. Most individuals are able to quickly apply the new tools that they have learned to their own personal lives and start living life based on their own values and goals. However, each person's journey is unique, and I am committed to walking side-by-side with all individuals as they seek and learn about their own path. All of this dignifying work is done within a space of acceptance, compassion and hope.

My Therapy Focus

My focus in therapy is two-fold. First, I help individuals learn new skills and strategies to help more effectively handle and cope with difficult thoughts, emotions and sensations. Often, challenging thoughts and emotions, such as anxiety, sadness and hopelessness, can be debilitating. This is why it is important for people struggling with psychological difficulties to learn new tools that will help them learn to live a life based on personal values and goals, rather than on distressing thoughts and emotions. Second, I guide individuals in discovering their personal values, which leads them into gaining more meaning and purpose in life. Moving towards the person you want to be each day of your life is the overarching aim of the work we do. Knowing your values and living according to them gives dignity and motivation to the challenging work that is done in therapy.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

Being skeptical or unsure about therapy is completely understandable and expected. Therapy involves talking about very personal and private topics with someone you don't really know. Opening up to people you know care about you, such as family and friends, can be difficult in and of itself. In therapy, you are encouraged to open up to someone who is initially a stranger. This is why coming to therapy requires courage and bravery. The fact that you are even considering attending therapy is a sign of courage and bravery. I believe that it is important for people to test the waters of therapy, which is why I offer a free consultation. This gives you an opportunity to get a feel for what therapy is about, and it allows you to get to know me. Client-therapist fit is important to a therapeutic relationship. You can use this consultation time to consider if we would be a good fit and to better understand what therapy is about.
