There are several advantages to paying out-of-pocket for therapy and choosing to avoid the risks of using your health insurance company to pay for therapy. A few possible risks of using your health insurance include:

Insurance companies only pay for services that are medically necessary and this requires your counselor to give you a mental health diagnosis, when you may just be struggling with daily life stressors and relationship concerns. Diagnoses will become a permanent part of your health record and may impact your eligibility for things in the future including new health insurance, life insurance, and many types of jobs.

Insurance companies often approve only a limited number of therapy sessions and will sometimes deny your claim, where it can take months to get reimbursed.

Insurance companies only approve certain providers which limits your choice of who you want to see for therapy.
