Advantages to Paying Out-of-Pocket for Counseling Versus Using Your Health Insurance

There are several advantages to paying out-of-pocket for therapy and choosing to avoid the risks of using your health insurance company to pay for therapy. A few possible risks of using your health insurance include:

Insurance companies only pay for services that are medically necessary and this requires your counselor to give you a mental health diagnosis, when you may just be struggling with daily life stressors and relationship concerns. Diagnoses will become a permanent part of your health record and may impact your eligibility for things in the future including new health insurance, life insurance, and many types of jobs.

Insurance companies often approve only a limited number of therapy sessions and will sometimes deny your claim, where it can take months to get reimbursed.

Insurance companies only approve certain providers which limits your choice of who you want to see for therapy.

What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist

I love being a therapist because I get to be there for my clients through their painful struggles and their exciting, life affirming moments. I feel touched everyday by sitting with clients while they transform tough emotions into new learning, insight, and hope. Witnessing my clients experience increased self-esteem, more satisfying relationships with their partners and family, and resolving old wounds from neglect or trauma is extremely rewarding work.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

Finding the right therapist can be challenging. Trust your gut feelings when meeting a new therapist. Do you feel heard and understood? Do you feel safe and comfortable with them? Does your therapist's philosophy about how people change align with your own? Don't get discouraged if the first one you meet doesn't feel like a good match. Research says that one of the biggest factors for clients achieving their goals is the quality of the relationship they have with their therapist. Schedule a couple consultations with different therapists so you can find one with a personality and presence that feels right to you.
