I help anxious kids, angry teens, and worn out parents!

I think relationships are really important and much of my work centers around supporting and restoring the primary relationships within families. In addition to providing individual and group therapy for children, teens, and their families, I write about topics affecting (children and their) families including bullying and oppositional and defiant behavior in children and teens.

Whether your family has experienced a major transition like divorce, a move to a new city, or a death in the family, or your child or adolescent experiences anger, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity, bullying, depression, or trauma, I may be able to help.

My approach with you will be tailored to your specific needs. When I work with children, I use carefully selected games, art, and other interactive activities to help them identify and express their thoughts and feelings. Children communicate a great deal about their internal emotional world through their actions and behaviors! With teens and adults, I take an integrative approach, incorporating elements from several counseling theories. If you have questions about my philosophy or approach, feel free to ask!

Please visit my website for more resources and information. You can also "follow" me on Twitter @betsysmithlpc where I post articles and information about children and mental health.

It is easiest to reach me directly by phone, email, or through my website. I offer a free initial phone consultation so that I can understand more about your situation, and you can have the opportunity to get to know me and ask any questions that you may have.

What I Usually Need to Know to Help

When you call, I will ask you to share with me what concern you have that prompted your call. I will ask for information about your child's age, gender, and personality. I will want to know about any recent major events in the child's life including a new sibling, moving to a new school, parental divorce, or a death in the family. I may also ask questions about what things you have tried so far to address the concern.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

Everyone experiences negative emotions and struggles in life. It can be hard to tell when you are simply experiencing a difficult time, and when you may need additional help. As a parent, you are the expert on your child. If you notice changes in patterns or behavior that concern you, it is usually worth a call to check it out. Additionally, it may be time to seek help if your child is often sad, worried, or afraid, clings to you and doesn't want to leave home, is overly concerned about failing or making mistakes, takes unsafe risks, acts angry much of the time, shows signs of alcohol or drug use, or seems worried or fearful about going to school.

Still unsure? This is precisely the reason that I offer a free initial consultation. If you are unsure about whether your child or teen needs mental health counseling, call and ask! I will be happy to discuss your observations and concerns--with no pressure to schedule an appointment or begin therapy. If I can provide you with additional information or resources, I will do that as well.
