I am particularly adept at working with couples in distress having worked with a wide variety of couples including those being highly stressed through emotional turmoil, and those coping with physical illness. I have worked with many couples and individuals dealing with affairs, and now, email/web distractions. The model I use, emotionally focused therapy, is one which is totally supportive of both members of the relationship and allows partners to learn to first de-escalate their conflict, and then how to really get closer.
Psychotherapy helps individuals through deepening a person's humanity--their self understanding, and self-compassion. With understanding and compassion, individuals are able to be honest with themselves and others about needs, and preferences.
The purpose of psychotherapy spans from minimizing emotional anxiety and depression, through to minimizing conflict with others, on to optimizing self knowledge and expression, from there into optimizing one's career and relationship, and ultimately facilitating finding meaning and spiritual fulfillment in life.
I am passionate about helping people come alive, and find love, richness and fulfillment in their lives.
To help clients understand themselves, heal from prior hurts, and provide the safety and security to explore new options. As a couple's therapist it is to support each member of the couple to understand the hurts under their patterns of reaction and to really learn how to reach out and touch each other in emotionally satisfying ways. The research shows that couples who can learn to make meaningful emotional contact really have improved relationships. Couples who merely learn how to negotiate responsibilities, may end up more effective roommates, but do not report emotional satisfaction in their relationship. Negotiation may be necessary but it is not sufficient for feeling really safe, secure, and meaningfully connected to the one we love. This kind of connection comes form some careful experience of learning how to actually make intimate emotional contact with one we love..
Building a relationship with a client so that they can develop an easy compassionate way of understanding themselves and as a natural consequence of this improve their relationships with others.
