My Approach to Helping
Are you exhausted after caring for a loved one? Is the addict in your life robbing you of your sanity and making it difficult to sleep at night? I help people impacted by chronic illness, addiction, and substance abuse break free from the actions and beliefs that are hurting them and their relationships. When an individual is ill or given a diagnosis, the entire family is impacted. This is an extremely challenging time and unless they've lived it, many people just don't get it. Our sessions are a great time to talk about what is going on, the good and the bad, with zero judgment.
Therapy with me is probably nothing like what you've seen on TV. I pride myself on being a modern, relatable therapist. I have a very casual, solution-oriented therapeutic style and work to provide the best treatment for you. Sometimes it may feel like you're talking to a friend who is clinically trained, understanding, and devoted to helping you.

I know first hand the impact chronic illness and addiction have on a family. I have lived through the ups and downs of treatment, symptoms, and recovery. I know that often relationships suffer and stress skyrockets. I know that relapses happen and they hurt every time.
I would love to help you create overall wellness. This means implementing positive change in multiple areas of your life like nutrition, exercise, work, relationships, while also improving your mental health. You are the expert on your life. I am here to help you sift through all the noise and figure out what is stopping you from living your absolute best life.
Using clinically tested and evidence-based interventions, I help individuals, couples, and families manage the stress of chronic health conditions and addiction recovery more effectively. I have worked with countless families with a chronically ill child or spouse. I also enjoy helping families in early addiction recovery or couples facing a new diagnosis establish a new normal and improve relationship satisfaction. Additionally, I provide counseling to adult children of alcoholics & dysfunctional families.
Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
Individuals and Substance Abuse: Whether you are in early or long term recovery, or just completed treatment at a detox or residential facility, I can help you manage your recovery more effectively. We will work together to mange triggers, increase coping skills, and minimize the risk of relapse.
Individuals and Chronic Illness: Your mental health may be impacted following a chronic health diagnosis. We will work together to help you manage health anxiety, learn how to communicated effectively with family, friends, and your medical team, and adjust to the reality of living with chronic illness.
Couples, Families, and Substance Use: Your life has probably changed dramatically because of substance abuse. It can be difficult to acknowledge and admit to relationship problems, but the greatest healing can come from a couple or family working through their relationship problems together. This includes facing up to patterns of lies and secrecy, acknowledging and healing from current or past affairs, seeking and granting forgiveness, and ending patterns of abuse. We will work together to create a new life based on recovery and trust.
Couples, Families, and Chronic Illness: When a partner, child, or parent is diagnosed with an illness, your relationships are often impacted dramatically. This can lead to issues with intimacy, communication, distribution of household labor, and finances. I help couples facing a wide variety of chronic illness find their new normal as a couple or family. The therapeutic process is often focused on creating new communication patterns, processing emotional reactions to the illness, developing both togetherness and independence in the relationship, and learning how to utilize your own internal strengths and resources to address interpersonal problems or medical complications.
Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families: Children of alcoholics and dysfunctional families carry a unique burden. We will work together to process past trauma and evaluate strained relationships to create a new, fulfilling future.
Caregivers: Caregivers of individuals with chronic illness suffer from a variety of mental health issues. I can help you manage stress more effectively and take care of you in the face of uncertain circumstances. This includes processing end of life care, adjusting to new circumstances, and providing you with a space to heal.
What I Say to People Concerned about the Therapy Process
Pursuing therapy can be overwhelming. I hope I can dispel any fears you have about the process.
Before we meet in person, I like to have a quick phone consult. This gives us time to get acquainted and discuss goals for therapy, billing, and logistics.
If we decide to pursue therapy, we will schedule an appointment and all paperwork will be sent to your email.
The first few sessions will be spent getting to know one another and setting goals for therapy. Sessions are normally 50 minutes, but this can be adjusted.
Our sessions will be a collaborative process where we discover what is holding you back and what is working for you. You will learn how to manage stress more effectively and implement new ways of coping. I tend to keep sessions casual and allow you to take the lead. Each session will be different, but we will continue working on similar themes to promote growth and change.
Have any other questions? Set up a consult, I'd be happy to answer them!
