My Approach to Helping
Each individual is unique with a natural and normal response process that may be similar to, or quite different from, a parent, a sibling, a significant other in their adult personal or professional life or even the therapist that they have gone to for help. Extraverts for instance have a noticeably different need for validation than introverts do and thinking oriented individuals experience emotions on a completely different planet than feeling oriented individuals do.
In order to provide feedback that optimally fits with my client's nature I have them fill in a natural personality questionnaire based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Profiles derived from this measure tend to be both accurate and validating. A discovery process then unfolds, an increased awareness in the client that the way they are, and always have been, is both natural and normal. This insight leads to greater self-understanding and acceptance and sets the foundation for resolving issues in their life in a manner that does not require self abandonment.

What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist
I love helping individuals, couples and family members discover that they have a natural and normal core nature, a set of automatically triggered perceptions, priorities, values and meanings that may be the same as, or quite different from those of a parent, a sibling or some other significant other in their lives, differences that are not matters of choice but rather of nature. It is very rewarding to help people both with self-understanding and acceptance as well as with understanding and acceptance of those that naturally differ from them. When these differences are understood and accepted debilitating debates over whose perceptions are right and whose are not often come to an end allowing for accommodation and compromise in areas that had not been possible before.
What I Usually Need to Know to Help
Their natural and normal response orientation. For instance, Extraverts connect with self and others in a manner that naturally differs from introverts. Individuals that process literally come to conclusions that naturally differ from individuals that process information from a possible meanings orientation. Thinking response oriented come to conclusions and express them in a manner that naturally differs from how feeling response oriented to the same and individuals who automatically operate from a plan address future events in a manner that differs significantly from those with a more open ended approach. In addition I want to know what my clients temperament is. There are four possibilities and I want to make sure that I provide feedback that fits with my clients core temperament rather than my own. Once I have this information I can provide feedback that is optimally validating for someone wired the way they are, feedback that leads to greater self-understanding and acceptance. This process is covered in a five minute video at the top the home page on my website, www.NaturalPersonalityInstitute.com.
