My Approach to Helping
Therapeutic Approaches: I am eclectic, which means I include a variety of therapeutic approaches based on individual need. These include Art Therapy, Play Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Dialectic (DBT), Marital and Family Systems, Trauma Informed, and Person-Centered Psychodynamic Therapy. I assist my clients to reach their treatment goals in a manner most comfortable for them and treat each according to their individual needs. I realize that it takes strength to come into therapy. I feel it is important to remember the positives of self and encourage and assist my clients in practicing this. I strive to help them feel safe and comfortable when meeting with me.
About me: During my leisure time in the summer I enjoy gardening, bike riding and hiking trails with my husband. I enjoy going to professional sporting events (especially baseball), with my husband and son. In colder weather I spend my leisure time reading and watching movies. I am a dog lover and have volunteered for the Humane Society in the past. Presently, I enjoy spending time with my own Lab-Retriever mix.
More Info About My Practice
I received my Masters (MS) degree from Purdue University. The mind and body are inter-related. Before becoming a counselor, I was employed as an Occupational Therapist. This also worked well in allowing me to have a greater understanding of how the body physically responds to the emotions pertaining to life situations. As a counselor, I appreciate the opportunity I have had in working with both male and female clients in a variety of age groups from young children to elderly adults. I have experience in working in a variety of settings. Some of the areas I have worked in are hospitals, clinics, and shelters for survivors of sexual and domestic abuse. I believe that trust and respect are important to develop in a counseling situation before anything can be accomplished. I also want my clients to know that I am not judging them. I do not give advice. I work with my clients and provide suggestions that can work for them.
