My Approach to Helping
When we hear “trauma,” we generally think of things like war, sexual assault, car accidents, or gunshots. But trauma can also be emotional abuse, divorce, bullying, racism… basically, anything that makes us feel threatened and causes distress. Often our loved ones want to help take the pain away by advising us to “move on and let it go.” You have probably figured out by now that this is not as easy as it sounds. If you could “let it go,” you probably would have by now.
Trauma doesn\'t have to be life-threatening, it just has to overwhelm your ability to cope. I use researched techniques (like EMDR, DBT, and mindfulness) to teach skills you can use to feel better right away. Learning to be mindful builds a foundation to cope more effectively with emotions and get our needs met while improving relationships with friends and family. Erasing trauma is not possible but it doesn\'t have to define you.
