My Approach to Helping

I work with clients to develop understanding and compassion toward themselves. So many of us speak to ourselves in ways we would never speak to a friend. It can be hard to let ourselves "off the hook" when we feel we could or should do better - as partners, parents, employees, bosses, friends... but when we are "on the hook" we feel bad, or worse. From that place, it is hard to grow and change.

Together we can create a safe space for you to explore where you are stuck. I will teach you ways of seeing and understanding that allow you to connect with yourself in new ways. How do your story and your thoughts about yourself shape how you feel? What do you hope for? It's time to get unstuck!

I weave together insights from neuroscience, behavioral, and cognitive research to work on the mind-body connection and address thoughts, emotions, and reactions to personal historical experiences. Though it sounds "sciency" my approach is warm and relational.

How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist

Learning to accept myself and my own limitations helped me immensely in nurturing love and compassion for other people. That was a serious struggle as I navigated a debilitating neurological conditionchronic pain and infertility in my early 30s. Life can be challenging and we all face struggles. What we tell ourselves about our flaws and struggles is often negative and judgemental. Coming to see ourselves as unique and beautiful - part of the amazing tapestry of humanity - is a gift that is hard to give ourselves. It often takes seeing ourselves through the eyes of another person to realize being ourselves is beautiful, important, and enough.

Groups I Work With

I work with older teens and adults who face challenges with anxiety, grief, and trauma. Many of my clients find that exploring ideas of themselves that developed in childhood and teen years is helpful in understanding their reactions to events in the present. Early feelings of inadequacy and shame often lead to hiding as we get older. Hiding can take many forms: low self-esteem, perfectionismoverworking, substance use (to hide from ourselves), and many others. What happens when you enter therapy and find a space that is safe, or at least safe enough, to allow yourself to be seen is a chance to be met and known for the human, fragile, imperfect, and magnificent person you are.
