My Approach to Helping

Hello, my name is Chris Coleman, and I am the owner and Clinical Director & Supervisor of Liberation Counseling & Consultation, LLC, licensed in The Commonwealth of Virginia. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment provider, Certified Substance Abuse Counselor, Master Addiction Counselor through NAADAC, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, National Certified Counselor through NBCC, and a certified Substance Abuse Provider with Department of Transportation. I have Masters degrees in Addiction Counseling and Professional Counseling. I have over 22 years of experience in the field. With that said, it's not as important of how much I know that you care about, yet, you want to know how much I care and how I use what I know, right?

My primary theoretical approaches are Cognitive Behavioral, Reality (Choice), Motivational Interviewing (Enhancement), Solution Focused. I utilize the evidenced-based approaches from the scientific training, yet, my base and strength of therapy, come from a faith-based model, which means, the approach is from the inside, out. My approach is one of compassion, empathy, person-centered, genuine and to be upfront to find where you want to go, and how I may walk with you to get you there. You are treated with dignity and respect as a person, not as a diagnosis.

My Role as a Therapist

To provide evidenced based (the science & practice) and biblically based (Spiritual foundation) services to assist those suffering from substance use and co-occurring disorders, which is our specialty. My approach is one of empathy, compassion, with the understanding, it?s not your fault, but it is your fight. I aim to empower those served with hope, healing and wisdom to overcome, to experience, liberty. I will always pray for you, and will ask for permission to pray, WITH YOU.

What I Usually Need to Know to Help

Instead of the approach of, "What's wrong with you", I would like to know, "What happened to you?". Understanding we all have a story; however, instead of making comparison to what this person or that person did, how it impacted them, etc,. let's find out about you, and how it impacted and impacts, you, now. If it causes a problem, it IS a problem. what would you like to do about it? How would like to get there? And, how may I assist you in getting there?
