My Approach to Helping

Hello! I am a Licensed Psychologist with 17 years of experiencing providing counseling to adolescents and adults. My style is warm, curious, and laid back. My goal is to listen deeply and carefully in order to understand you and your unique experiences. I strive to create an environment that is collaborative and welcoming. Through this safe, therapeutic relationship, we can explore and understand your past experiences so that you can relate more freely with others, have more satisfying relationships, and gain greater self-awareness and confidence. My therapeutic approach is rooted in attachment, relational, and psychodynamic approaches, meaning that I value how your relationships influence and support you.

More Info About My Practice

I am based out of Jacksonville, FL, but offer counseling via telehealth throughout the entire state of Florida. People seek my assistance with many different problems including depression, grief, anxiety, identity and self-esteem difficulties, social anxiety, relationship problems, life transitions, worklife balance, and many, many more. I also enjoy working with college students and women experiencing perinatal concerns (trying to conceive, stressful pregnancy, post-partum difficulty, pregnancy loss or termination, and pregnancy after loss).

To get started you can email, call, or schedule an appointment on my website. I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to help us decide if we are a good fit.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

Interpersonal Process Group
This is a 16-week group that meets weekly online. Weekly group attendance is expected.

Group may be a good fit if you:
- Have trouble asking for what you want and need
- Want to feel closer to you friends or partner
- Want to understand why your relationships keep ending
- Want to feel less socially anxious
- Have difficulty being vulnerable
- Have difficulty being your "true self" around others-or maybe don't know what that is

How does group work?
Over the course of 16 weeks, group members will be invited to:
1. notice what they are feeling about themselves and others in the moment and to and to share this with the group
2. share important aspects of their lives, over time, to the group.

Most people are not used to speaking so directly and honestly to each other so it can be both exhilarating and scary. Everyone gets to go at their own pace and share when they are ready.

Why Group Works
The reason that this kind of group works is because over time, group members start to relate to each other in the same way that they relate to people in their lives. The good, bad, and the ugly. Group members are encouraged to give each other feedback about their interpersonal ?blind spots? in a helpful way. From there, group members get the opportunity to practice new ways of relating.

Benefits of Group
Safety, acceptance, and compassionate feedback are at the heart of group therapy. You will get the chance to learn about yourself and practice new ways of relating. As a result of this unique experience, you will feel more confident as you pursue new friendships and romantic relationships in your life.

When: Tuesdays 12-1:30 pm (90 minutes)
Dates: August 31-December 14, 2021 (16 weeks)
Where: Virtual meetings via our HIPAA compliant Zoom platform.
Facilitators: Shannon York, PsyD & Carrie Cragun-Atchison, PhD
Fee: $65
Anyone in FL is eligible to participate.
If interested, contact me and we will schedule a time for a meeting to discuss if group is a good fit.

How Psychotherapy Can Help

Counseling can be helpful when you feel like you do not have the personal resources to get through a difficult situation or time in your life. You may feel like you are drowning, can't breathe, or that there is an elephant on your chest. Sometimes there is a trigger and sometimes it's hard to identify one. Therapy can help you gain awareness into your difficulties and help you find the first step forward. I am honored to walk this path with my clients.
