The BPD has also received Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) training. CIT serves two purposes. The first is to improve officer and public safety. The second is to direct residents with mental health concerns away from the judicial system and toward treatment. BPD officers receive CIT training in verbal de-escalation, interviewing special victims, responding to residents with autism, and scenarios involving the use of force. An estimated 133 BPD officers have completed CIT training.
