My Approach to Therapy

Need a safe space to work through challenges in confidence? Troubled by relationships, parenting, school or work? Fighting anxiety, depression or life-limiting rules or patterns? Ready for a new beginning? Our experience is shaped by habits and expectations that are maintained by loyalty to important relationships, and by confirming experience. They affect our relationships, success, and happiness. Therapy can help. Hurtful habits and expectations can be retired, and new ones can be implicitly learned, or chosen and implemented. My practice of therapy is as diverse as my clients, following their deep and increasingly explicit goals, and their changing preferences. Growing out of shyness and an early focus on math, physics and neuroscience, my own journey is one of growing safety, emotional presence and integration of body, thought and feeling, while letting go of old habits of emotional survival. In over twenty years as a therapist, I have worked with people facing grief, displacement, growing up, parenting, generational differences, career transitions, work organization and communication, substances, sexual preference, learning disorders, ADHD, multiple stressors, depression, anxiety, abuse, neglect, and relationship issues. Clients often fear that their problems will be overwhelming, but even when experiences are frustrating, grim or frightening, sharing them in therapy can be relieving and enlivening. Alternatives then become possible.

My Practice & Services

My fee is $230 for 45-50 minutes. If you are committed to therapy, and particularly if you are a student or single parent, I can be very flexible with my rate and still be fully engaged in your therapy. I am currently seeing clients by telehealth only, but will eventually return to my office in San Francisco and a new location in Los Altos or Palo Alto. As part of my own self-care, I do not deal with insurance companies. However, I am happy to format bills for reimbursement if you have out-of-network coverage or a flexible spending account. I am very open to initial consultations to see if we might be a fit, and only charge if you find the session helpful. You do not need to worry about pressure or hurting me.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

A good-fitting therapist will help you express who you are when not inhibited by guilt, shame, fear or conflicting loyalties and responsibilities. When looking for a therapist, go into your initial consultation hoping for the help you want. Return if you find it. If you don't find it, schedule an initial session with someone else. I wouldn't recommend scheduling a series of therapist "interviews" up front, as that often makes it harder for people to show up with the hope and investment it takes to do productive work. Do express your needs, reactions and misgivings in real time, as much as you're able. Do give yourself time to think and feel, talk to trusted friends and trust your intuition.
