Newton is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. It covers a land area of around 18 square miles. Newton was first settled in 1630 and incorporated as New Towne in 1688. The city was renamed Newton in 1691. 

Newton has a population of 89,000 people. There was a 5% increase in the population from 2010 to 2017. Roughly 2,500 veterans live in the city of Newton. 

The population of Newton is 74% white, 14% Asian, 6% Hispanic, and 3% black. Over 21% of the people in the city are foreign-born. Approximately 26% of Newton residents speak a native language other than English. The city has 5,700 Chinese speakers, 3,500 Spanish speakers, and 2,700 Russian speakers.

Mental Health in Newton

Opioid overdoses are increasing in the city of Newton. There were 57 overdose cases in 2015 and 75 in 2016.  In 2015, seven residents died as a result of an overdose, but in 2016 the number increased to 17. This shift represents an increase of 140%.

To help stem the rising levels of substance abuse, prescription drug disposal sites have been set up in the city. One such site is located in the lobby of Newton Wellesley Hospital, and another is located at the Newton police station. Since 2016, first responders in the city have been equipped with the drug Narcan, which can be used to reverse an opioid overdose. Substance abuse clinicians are also available at the hospital to offer support for people in the early stages of recovery.
