Several years ago I worked at an inpatient facility for eating disordered women. While there, I discovered my passion in serving this population and continue to enjoy working with women who struggle in their relationship with food. Similar to other relationships, the relationship with food is a complicated one and the journey begins in undertanding ourselves. What motivates us to do what we do? I feel honored to be a part of the journey where women learn to gain a greater understanding and self-acceptance of themselves, their relationship with food, and their own bodies.
I believe choosing a therapist is primarily about the "goodness of fit" between the therapist and client. In addition to being curious about the therapist's education, training, and therapeutic apporach, I encourage clients to take note of their own comfort level with the therapist. In simpler words, how do you feel when you are in the room with the therapist? Our use of self can often provide us with information on how good the fit is between therapist and client. It is important that clients feel safe enough to explore their presenting issues in an environment that matches the pace, style, and self of the therapist.
I had a college professor who used to tell us that "in chaos comes growth". I have found this to be very true in my own life as each challenge, each obstacle, has enabled me to grow in wisdom, empathy, and humility. In some of my most difficult moments, my self growth has been monumental. I continue to be amazed with the gifts that the universe presents to us in the most unconventional ways!
