My Approach to Helping

A person usually comes to see me when something isn't working in their life and they haven't been able to make the changes themselves. My approach is to explore with the person so we can both find the root of the difficulty. I am interested in healing, not fixing. I work with the person to determine what mode of therapy will be best, describing what is involved. I look for the resources and strengths a person brings to the work and use these strengths in the healing process. Often, the root of a difficulty goes back to earlier history, perhaps to childhood development. I often do a lot of education to help a person understand where the difficulty came from in a way that does not blame anyone, either the person or others involved at the time. Mostly, I use a model of working with Self and parts that describes a way to see ourselves as whole and complete, yet with parts that can become extreme at times when they see a need to protect. Much of our work often addresses these protective parts to help them relax or soften their protective grip, so we can access the more vulnerable places that are the ones in need of healing. Usually, as these vulnerable parts heal and let go of their long-held burdens, the current disturbing patterns in the person's life change. Healing is evidenced by letting go of burdens, a shift in energy, and a change in some aspect of one's life.
