Change comes from discovering what your core beliefs are (i.e. Nobody will ever love me; I don't fit in; I'm worthless; I'm a failure), acknowledging their negative role in your life, and ultimately challenging them. You may also find that some of your beliefs are true (i.e. You think I'm a failure, and the truth is you haven't achieved as much as you want socially, academically or professionally). We'll look to find patterns in your perceived failures and we'll make plans to correct them. In this model, change doesn't happen in the therapy session. Rather, it's accomplished between sessions using homework assignments which may include journaling, worksheets, meditation, or behavioral experiments (i.e. asking for help when you never have in the past). This requires real commitment on your end; there is no quick and easy fix to life-long patterns of thinking and behavior. However, I'm sure you'll find the reward is worth the effort.
I use a number of state-of-the-art techniques, including cognitive therapy, mindfulness and body-centered work, experiential methods, and psychodynamic theory. No one therapy technique works for everyone, so I will be flexible and creative to meet your treatment needs.
