My Approach to Helping
My approach to counseling is an integrated one, meaning that I will utilize any orientation, method or technique available to me and appropriate for my client at that particular time. Rather than analyze and explain the clients problems for him or her I attempt to help the client uncover and release emotional blocks from the past which hinder his or her present functioning. My orientation includes active listening, attachment theory, work with inner child and encouragement of deep emotional release, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy.
Philosophically I believe that my client is an inherently capable and good human being, whose present functioning has been hampered in minor or major ways through past distress experiences. I pay attention to the client's personal background (family of origin) as well as cultural and societal background (influences having to do with class background, race religion and gender). I also evaluate with my client any addictive behaviors, which he or she may have adopted over the years as coping mechanisms.
