My Approach to Helping

Therapy provides a chance to create meaningful and lasting change in your life and relationships. It can help to finally break the cycle of painful, repeated patterns and aid you and your loved ones in living a more balanced, meaningful, and fulfilling life. Above all, I feel the therapeutic process to be a creative partnership in which self-reclamation and growth are made possible through the safety of a relationship where you can experience unconditional respect and acceptance. For this reason, I place great importance on building and maintaining a warm, supportive, and trusting working relationship with clients. I also believe in tailoring the therapeutic process to your unique needs and working with the strengths you already possess.

In my work with children, I honor the invitation to their world and experiences. Sincere communication, patience, and unreserved acceptance are integral to forming a therapeutic space for children where they can comfortably explore and integrate difficult emotions and experiences. While the process is personalized to the individual child, I typically use a combination of art therapy, talk therapy, and play therapy. I hold that a child's innate capacity for imagination is a great resource that can not only assist them in the process of healing and growth, but can support and aid them over the long-term.

In my work with couples, I focus on establishing a safe environment where both partners can learn to communicate in new and healthy ways perhaps for the first time. We will work together to stop the hurtful patterns that seem to take on a life of their own and leave each partner alienated and in pain. Rather than try to fit your relationship into any one psychological model or theory, I will use my training, experience, and intuition to meet your relationship where it is currently at and to work with both partners towards positive, healthy change.

As a proud gamer & geek therapist, I am happy to offer a space where others in the geek community can sit with someone who speaks your language and who can understand.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

I have found that, in the words of Robert Frost, "the best way out is always through." At the same time, I am intimately aware of the hesitation, anxiety, shame, and deep sense of vulnerability that can arise when you are considering therapy. As uncomfortable as it may be, your ability to access these feelings forms the very backbone of meaningful change and growth. What's more, is that you no longer have to go it alone. It is possible to partner with a therapist who is warm, supportive, non-judgmental, empathic, and will be able to safely hold all that you need to bring. I believe that the therapists who have done their own work and continue to do so tend to be more deeply attuned and actively engaged with their clients, providing an overall more positive experience and outcome of therapy.

Complimentary or reduced cost initial sessions can be an opportunity for you to consult with several therapists to see who feels as though they would be the best fit for your particular needs. Each time you consult with a potential therapist, you will become more aware of these needs and who will be able to provide the best help for you, so no visit is ever wasted.

Brene Brown states, "courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen." It is in this way that therapy is continually a courageous journey and I welcome you in taking the first steps in your journey of change and growth.
