My Approach to Helping

I am Ryan Malphrus a Psychotherapist in the state of Maryland who provides individual and group counseling with adolescents and adults, with a specialization in men's issues.

I have worked for over 10 years helping others understand and accept themselves, in order to live a truly meaningful life. I specialize working with men struggling to find their place in the current society that has left them behind. Most treatment has not adequately been developed deal with men’s issues, as evidence by the large but silent mental health crisis within men and boys. Men’s emotional expression such as anger and irritability are often pathologized and punished, opposed to being heard for the underlying cause.

Though I have vast experience with many therapeutic modalities, my primary orientation is using a Psychodynamic approach, emphasizing one’s entire life story to best understand present day challenges. I will work with you to identify and remove the barriers that you back from growth. Although new insights are expected and important it is through experiencing a new type of relationship in therapy that growth is truly made. My ideal client is someone who is ready and willing to dive into the process of exploration and self understanding.

Although I primarily use a Psychodynamic frame work, no one person is the same and will take from Humanistic, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to ensure treatment is tailored to your specific goals and needs.

I have completed his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Maryland and received his Masters of Social Work from The Catholic University of America. I am licensed in Maryland and is a Board-certified clinical supervisor.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

Not surprising given the spread of therapy speak through society that has primarily just alienated men and boys from seeking potentially life altering services. I will not be providing a magic bullet, telling you how to live life, or be acting like a guru that knows it all. At the beginning stages of therapy I am here to listen and collaboratively work to understand and teach your the patterns of your mind and body. Once, we understand who we are, solutions often become quite obvious and we will work towards developing the picture of your ideal life and develop skills necessary to achieve that potential. I think of our bodies and minds similar to any piece of technology we use in our daily lives. The more we understand how the tool was made and the ways it functions, the more effective we can be with that tool to craft things to our desires. I am here to guide your in this process and go at the pace in which you will be challenged, but not overwhelmed. This is due to a belief that humans are anti-fragile, in that they become stronger when they willingly confront challenges. To ensure this, open communication and checking in about treatment is a regular part of this process. All feelings and thoughts are permitted in my office and will be treated with the seriousness and care they deserve. If you have any other concerns about therapy I would encourage you to reach out for a free consultation.
