My Approach to Helping
I am Ryan Malphrus a Psychotherapist in the state of Maryland who provides individual and group counseling with adolescents and adults, with a specialization in men's issues.
I have worked for over 10 years helping others understand and accept themselves, in order to live a truly meaningful life. I specialize working with men struggling to find their place in the current society that has left them behind. Most treatment has not adequately been developed deal with men’s issues, as evidence by the large but silent mental health crisis within men and boys. Men’s emotional expression such as anger and irritability are often pathologized and punished, opposed to being heard for the underlying cause.
Though I have vast experience with many therapeutic modalities, my primary orientation is using a Psychodynamic approach, emphasizing one’s entire life story to best understand present day challenges. I will work with you to identify and remove the barriers that you back from growth. Although new insights are expected and important it is through experiencing a new type of relationship in therapy that growth is truly made. My ideal client is someone who is ready and willing to dive into the process of exploration and self understanding.
Although I primarily use a Psychodynamic frame work, no one person is the same and will take from Humanistic, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to ensure treatment is tailored to your specific goals and needs.
I have completed his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Maryland and received his Masters of Social Work from The Catholic University of America. I am licensed in Maryland and is a Board-certified clinical supervisor.
