My Approach to Helping

The vast majority of problems that bring people to therapy are the result of using defense mechanisms to avoid facing uncomfortable emotions and conflicts. When these defenses become chronic they start to create the very problems that we ruin our quality of life. I help patients to identify the defense mechanisms that they are using and to turn against those mechanisms so that they can face the emotions and conflicts that they have been avoiding. Once those emotions and conflicts have been worked through, there is no need for the defense mechanisms that have been ruining their lives. This process is knows as ISTDP and there is a strong body of research to support its efficacy.

More Info About My Practice

I have broken out of the traditional 50 minute session framework. All of my sessions last 90 minutes and cost $200. My colleagues and I have seen tremendous benefits from using this longer session format which greatly facilitates the therapy process.

Many insurance companies reimburse patients directly for my services.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

Depression, Anxiety, OCD, Panic, Mind-Body Syndromes, Chronic Pain, Headaches, Insomnia, Relationship difficulties, Attachment Trauma, Personality Disorders, and Interpersonal Training for the Loved Ones of Addicts.

Most people who are in a relationship with an addict have no idea how to manage that relationship and most of their well-intentioned "interventions" are actually counterproductive. I help such individuals learn how they can interact with addicts in ways that preserve their own sanity and that maximize the likelihood that the addict reduces his or her substance usage and seeks treatment. In most cases this method is far more helpful than expensive rehab facilities.
