My Approach to Helping

My practice focuses exclusively on assisting couples to understand how missteps occur in their relationships - and replacing them with new patterns to create a rich, rewarding, secure and functioning marriage or couple-ship.

If your marriage isn't feeling stable, likely you're experiencing some combination of heart ache, worry, hurt, resentment and perhaps some fears. Intense emotions are simply going to happen when our relationship feels threatened. But as strong emotions increase, our ability to think clearly, solve problems, or even "hear" each other's experience will almost always decrease.

There are times when 'how much you love each other' isn't the most important factor for being secure and connected with each other. And being immersed in a culture with an abundance of myths and beliefs about love and relationships, it's easy to get confused when you're having difficulties in a relationship with someone you love.

But, your marriage or partnership is likely to be the most complex relationship in your life. It'll go through many phases and transitions, face challenges from outside demands, and encounter natural ebbs and flows of intimacy. And marriage in the 21st century is more challenging than ever before. We've never put so many expectations on our partners to fill so many roles - while the busyness and other demands of daily life also just keep increasing. At the same time, we've never had so many distractions and technologies that often unintentionally interfere with our connection and intimacy.

At Asheville Marriage Counseling I combine scientific research on what makes secure marriages work, neuroscience about how our brains actually function , and 48+ years of counseling experience to collaborate with you and guide you into creating a high quality secure connection in your unique marriage.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With:

Having reached my own 'senior years', I have a greater understanding of issues unique to later life relationships, whether long standing or new. While I certainly work with couples of all ages, I find my age and experience often allows a degree of compassion and understanding into some unique aspects of relationships in our senior years, that I simply couldn't have before being in that age group myself.

Groups I Work With

I work with couples of all sorts addressing the underlying elements necessary for creating successful partnering and relationships. My approach is largely the same with 'pre-marital counseling' through to assisting couples who've been together for decades; because what is essential for collaborative, fulfilling, and functional relationships is the same for all.
