My Approach to Helping
I chose to become a counselor because I have always had a strong desire to help others on their healing journeys. It has been my experience that most clients know what they need to do to heal. Through counseling, we collaborate in the process of uncovering that inner wisdom, identifying and working through obstacles that have gotten in the way along their journey (e.g., trauma, depression, anxiety, grief, or other forms of suffering), and work towards building the life they hope to create. As we move through this process, I assume that each person is the expert on their own lives and hopes. I listen deeply to their past experiences, how they would like to experience transformation or change, and then together choose an approach to counseling that best meets their needs, qualities, and preferences. Among the different counseling approaches I use are humanistic counseling, solution-focused approaches, internal family systems therapy, EMDR, hypnosis, and guided imagery.
More Info About My Practice
I offer a free initial consultation to persons who seek counseling services. I see our initial meeting as a time for you to get to know me, learn more about my approach to counseling, and decide whether or not I am the best person to work with you. I believe that in order to cultivate a relationship that promotes positive change and healing, the client and counselor must develop a meaningful alliance. While this site (as well as my website) may provide important information about my approach to counseling and my counseling skills and experiences, it will be important to meet one another in person to experience the nature of our alliance and then determine whether I am the best counselor with whom to work at this point in time. If we decide to work together, My fee schedule is as follows:
Individual and Couple Counseling Sessions (50 minutes): $100.00
Individual Sessions (30 minutes): $50.00
Support Group for Caregivers of Loved Ones who Live with Dementia (90 minutes): Free
Support Group for Persons Who Live with Dementia (60 minutes): Free
While I do not accept insurance, I do provide a sliding fee based on a couple or individual's ability to pay.
Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
While I have experience with a wide variety of counseling concerns, I am most skilled at helping with issues related to trauma, debilitating anxiety, sexual orientation, and transpersonal/spiritual concerns.
My View on the Nature of 'Disorders'
I assume that most of us develop the difficulties that bring us to counseling and psychotherapy as a natural reaction to the hardships we experience in life. Oftentimes, assigning a diagnosis to these experiences can result in the belief that we are to blame for our own difficulties, when in reality many forms of suffering originate or intensify due to an external experience. In my previous work as a counselor and teacher, I have found that labeling a person with a diagnosis can inhibit, rather than promote, change and healing. At the same time, I also assume that we are the only ones who can bring about our own healing. Therefore, I work with clients humanistically ~ listening deeply to each person as they share their own experiences and, together with my clients, identify activities that will help them experience greater joy, inspiration, meaning, and connection.
The Duration and Frequency of Therapy
I have found that the suggested frequency and duration of counseling varies by person, their intended goals for counseling, and the degree of suffering they have experienced throughout their lives. While my predominant form of counseling is short-term, we can discuss the frequency and duration that meets your specific needs when we meet for an initial consultation.
