My Role as a Therapist

I see my role primarily as a one of helping others to clarify their needs and goals and then find a path to realization of those needs and goals. I'm always working toward a day when my clients have the skills or insight and understanding to move forward without my assistance. I try very hard to avoid having people become dependent on me or the counseling process.

What I Say to People Concerned about the Therapy Process

In my experience I've found that safety is at the foundation of true healing. I work to establish a safe and trusting environment and allow the people I work with to set the pace. Once these fundamentals are in place it is much easier to work through difficult feelings in a healthy way. I also love to help people explore their own strengths and see ways they have overcome difficulties in the past. This often helps them recognize that they already possess valuable tools for dealing with their current situation. This is a big confidence boost for people.
