My Approach to Helping

Not everything that shapes us is chosen – and sometimes the hardest parts of life end up revealing the most about who we are. D. Blake Washington approaches counseling with authenticity, curiosity, and a deep respect for each of our capacities to grow. His work is collaborative and down-to-earth, grounded in the belief that healing doesn’t mean becoming someone else – it means reconnecting with what’s already within us.

Blake brings a steady, approachable presence to counseling, offering clients a space that feels supportive, genuine, and geared toward real connection. Whether we’re navigating change, feeling stuck, or simply trying to make sense of things, he offers a space that is welcoming, nonjudgmental, and rooted in meaningful growth.

At Foundations Counseling, D. Blake Washington welcomes clients who are seeking help with:

● Adolescents, Young Adults, and Adults – self-esteem and self-worth issues, anxiety, depression, drugs and alcohol, life coaching and goal setting, social and relationship problems, performancebehavior issues, criminal behavior

● Mental Health and Wellness – severe anxiety, depression, sexual and gender identity issues, addictions, life coaching, adjustment, life transitions, holistic health, nature-based therapies

● Life Transitions – life coaching, life stages, career counseling, spirituality, geographical transition, job transition, establishing self, grief and loss, male and female role issues, restoring meaning to life

● Growth-Oriented Counseling – career counseling, grief and loss, life coaching, burnout and lack of motivation, quarter-life crisis, relocation, empowerment, life transitions, individual development

● Individual Counseling – addictions, anger management, anxiety, depression, life coaching, self-esteem, self-worth issues, men’s issues, drug and alcohol abuse and addiction recovery, sex and porn addiction recovery, abandonment issues

D. Blake Washington is a National Certified Counselor. He earned a Master of Arts Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Adams State University and holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Literature with an emphasis in Secondary Education from the University of Texas at Dallas. He also completed graduate studies in Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Humanities at Southern Methodist University.

Blake draws from a blend of existential therapy, strengths-based counseling, cognitive-behavioral techniques, and mindfulness-informed practices. He integrates these approaches with a deep respect for each client’s personal story, supporting meaningful change through self-discovery, clarity, and emotional insight.

D. Blake Washington has spent his professional life helping others grow – first as an educator, and now as a counselor. His journey into counseling was shaped by his own experiences with personal transformation, health challenges, and a deep belief that people are capable of creating meaningful change at any point in their lives. Prior to becoming a counselor, Blake worked as a middle and high school English teacher in Texas, where he developed a passion for helping adolescents and young adults find their voice, especially during difficult transitions.

Blake has a particular interest in supporting a variety of clients, especially young men who may feel stuck, misunderstood, or unsure of their place in the world. He believes in meeting people exactly where they are, offering a steady presence and a space where reflection, insight, and growth can take root. He also brings lived experience and clinical insight into working with addiction, identity development, and finding purpose after loss or adversity.

Blake now calls Colorado home, where he enjoys exploring the outdoors with his Anatolian Shepherd, Dallas, and continuing to develop his long-term vision of integrative, nature-informed therapy work.
