My Approach to Helping
Asian American Therapist - Therapy for Childhood Trauma - Self Esteem Therapy
I help Asian American adults who struggle with perfectionism, guilt, and self-criticism find freedom. I get what it is like to grow up in a family feeling not good enough, and to never allow yourself to be you. I get what it is like to always put others' needs before yourself, and to have difficulty expressing what you want out of fear, guilt, and shame. I get it, it really sucks to be living like that. You want freedom from these feelings, and want to be able to express yourself. You try to please others, and feel guilty when you want to do something for yourself. You’re afraid of being “selfish” and your parents and family have called you that before. You want to break free from this thinking but don’t know how to get started. You tried to go to other therapists, but they don't get you. They tend to be white, and don’t understand your culture, background, or feelings.
As an Asian American therapist, I understand how much culture and family plays into things. My job is to not tell you to cut off your family, nor put down your culture.
I help clients by exploring the roots of their problems, and to help them get unstuck from all the negative messages that you are experiencing.
I am engaging in session and often allow my clients to bring their real and authentic feelings into session. I am NOT a “sit back and just let you talk without end” kind of therapist that says nothing, and does nothing. You will NOT be talking to a blank wall, rather I am an engaging person, giving you insight, feedback, and hope. I even share my own experiences in the hopes to connect with you as a real person.
Clients say that they understand themselves better after therapy and find clarity in who they are and their situation. They leave feeling better about themselves because they finally see that they are not always the problem. Most importantly, my clients claim that they feel understood and known by me, not just as a therapist but as a real person.
