My Approach to Helping
As we move through the stages of life, there may be changes that cause us to be faced with unexpected challenges. These are times it may help to process our experiences with another to decrease emotional distress or to explore different options. Sharing with another may also help identify underlying issues causing certain thoughts, emotions, and reactions we may be experiencing. It may also be helpful to gain an awareness of how learned behaviors, negative beliefs of self, and unresolved issues from the past can affect our mental health. Once this is worked through - it may be easier to appreciate and embrace the here and now.
I work with adolescents, adults, LGBTQ+ individuals, and couples who are struggling with a variety of challenges including anxiety, anger, stress due to life transitions, trauma, depression, and grief. I also work with relationship issues and found it is especially important to work on the relationship we have with ourselves because that can affect our relationships with others.
My approach to counseling utilizes evidence-based treatments which include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), the Gottman Method Couples Therapy, as well as solution-focused and mindfulness therapy. I am also trained in EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) which can help one heal from distressing life experiences. Walk and talk therapy can also be included to gain the benefits of nature and exercise. I was raised speaking English and Portuguese and understand cultural diversity - Falo português e ficaria honrada em atender você e sua familia.
It is important for me to provide a safe and supportive environment where emotions, beliefs, and concerns may be shared without judgement. Please let me know if I can answer any questions you may have.
