Substance abuse and suicide are serious concerns for Bellevue youth. In a 2014 survey of high school seniors in Bellevue, nearly one third said they done underage drinking in the past month, and one fifth reported using marijuana. In the fall of 2017, Bellevue educators wrote 56 suicide prevention plans for students considering killing themselves.

To address these issues and other mental health concerns, King County officials enacted a mental health screening program in Bellevue schools. The screenings seek to identify children who may otherwise slip through the radar and get them help before their problems grow into crises. The program has screened kids in 40 schools across King County.
