I believe my role as a therapist starts with providing a safe and empathic environment for the client. This is an important first step to form security and trust between my self and the client. Once this has been established, then my role as a therapist can expand. Now my role can be that of a guide. The client will let the therapist know where they want to, and can go. My role as a therapist is to assist the client on their journey of how to get there, navigate the threats and challenges, help the client become aware of things they may not notice, and utilize techniques and knowledge to assist in the clients journey. A therapist also needs to be aware so to not overstep their role. My role is not to tell a client how they feel, or what they want. However, my role as a therapist is to assist the client in self-discovery. Assist the client to discover what they can about themselves, their beliefs, their influences and assist the client in improving their own life.
For me, there are two main theoretical influences which guide my work with the clients I see. They are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Family Systems Therapy. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps to uncover what our daily thoughts are. Then we can examine how and if those thoughts influence how we act and, how we feel. Once this has been discovered and examined, then the client and therapist can work together on the process of altering those thoughts. So, how did these thoughts come to be? Well, that is where Family Systems Therapy can assist. Through our developing years, our "system" can have strong influences on how and what we learn about...everything. Our developing years, we are extremely avaliable to information. So, if our "system" gives us particular information on whatever, we may carry that through our life span. If we can discover where these thoughts may have generated from, we can utilize that information to alter our present thought process through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Which in turn, can alter how we behave and how we feel. Leading to a more complete and content existance.
