My Approach to Helping

My approach to counseling and therapy draws on a number of different techniques and theories as well as from some personal philosophies. Above all else, I believe that the client is the ultimate expert on themselves. However, sometimes people have a hard time seeing themselves clearly. This is where I come in. I integrate a Family Systems approach into counseling, which involves exploring your family so that you can understand why you are you. I will want to know more about where you came from and explore any patterns or significant events in your life. I don't believe in blaming others, but rather in learning and taking responsibility for yourself. I also use a Cognitive-Behavioral" approach which explores how your thoughts and your behaviors are impacting your life, and how to change them to get the results you want. I provide you with helpful information in the forms of articles, books, and relevant research so that you may learn more. I find that these techniques combined with a strong therapeutic relationship can be a recipe for success. I can work with you to better understand yourself and how you work. I believe that change can only occur if the client is dedicated to doing the necessary work; I am only a guide. I believe humor is an effective and necessary tool in therapy. I believe that you make sense as a person based on your background and beliefs, and I will work with you to gain a better understanding of how you work, and what you can change if you want to work differently.
