My Role as a Therapist

My role is to try to help! I try to ask questions that help a person think things through. Many times in life, we think the same thoughts over and over without resolution, but a professional asking questions might help one get to other thoughts or get to a course of action. And when married couples come in, I might be able to recommend a specific approach that might help bring new solutions to old issues. Finally, I must say that I am simply a professional trying to help, but I believe that ultimately it is God who helps us.

The Duration and Frequency of Therapy

The duration of therapy depends upon three things: the issue, the client's wishes, and the counselor. As such, I believe there is no pat answer to how long therapy takes. At Pathway, the majority of clients have marriage as one of the issues they wish to address. With this, some counselors elsewhere tend to have protracted periods of seeing the clients; but at Pathway, the approach is often much briefer. This is not because the number of sessions is limited (although it seems managed care insurance wants to limit it!). Rather, many Pathway marriage clients experience growth so do not feel the need to keep coming here perpetually. Of course, this is not guaranteed. Clients who need a longer period of time may continue; some issues are just more difficult than others. This also includes those clients who are not here for marriage issues. The process of terminating therapy may be initiated either by therapist or client at any time; therapist-initiated termination happens if the therapist feels ill-equipped to provide help or further help, as the only ethical thing is to try to help the client get good help somewhere else (the offering of referrals) rather than feigning ability to help the client. Termination should involve discussion when possible. The goal of therapy, or stopping therapy, is to be helpful to the client!
