My Approach to Helping
My passion is in helping people identify and make the changes that lead to meaning and satisfaction in their lives. I believe that you are the expert on your life, and my role is to provide encouragement, support and guidance on your journey of growth. I enjoy helping adult individuals and couples navigate life transitions, relationship issues and symptoms of ADHD, stress, anxiety and depression. I especially enjoy helping young adult men navigate the challenges that being “grown up” bring in this life. I am also passionate about the unique mental health challenges that face BIPOC communities. As an African American man, my expertise in working with these communities is informed by lived experience.
My primary approach when working with individuals is based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, as well as other behavioral approaches that incorporate mindfulness, acceptance and compassion. ACT is focused on creating a different relationship with the distressing thoughts, emotions and physical sensations that will show up as part of being a living human being. My goal is to help you get really clear about what is important to you and how you want to show up in the world, as well as empower you with the skills to live the life you want to live.
My therapeutic approach with couples is primarily Emotionally Focused Therapy. I have extensive and ongoing training in this cutting-edge therapy. I believe humans are wired for connection, and that one of the most important connections is the one we form with our life partners. My goal is to help you remove whatever gets in the way of having a loving, strong connection with your partner.
I have many years of experience working with individuals and families coping with chronic andor serious physical illness, initially as a respiratory therapist and subsequently as a medical social worker. I also live with a chronic illness. As such, I understand the unique culture of healthcare and the special challenges that both health care workers and consumers face.
When I am not working, I enjoy all things that involve good food, friends, family and self-care. I am the proud co-parent of a teenage English Cocker Spaniel and spend a good deal of time spoiling her. I look forward to learning more about you, what matters to you and traveling with you on your journey of hope and healing!
