My Approach to Helping

I come to counselling & psychotherapy via the M.Ed route. This means that a primary tenet of my approach is that we humans are learners. For us, new information can inform old stories, animating new choices. These choices become lived experience, which can inform & reinforce new beliefs about ourselves & others. New learning through personal discovery is a powerful pathway into transformation. For each of us, the path stretches to the end of our life: it is the life course, for we learning humans. Counselling & psychotherapy are merely several ways of walking that human pathway, with a temporary guide & companion.

I also come to counselling & psychotherapy via the ecopsychology route. This means that I bring an awareness & appreciation of our human experience as an earthling species; about us as part of nature. This piece of our healing work is about the dynamic, reciprocal support & wisdom flowing between, among, around & through Earth's great web of life, of which we are a part.

If you choose to do a piece of your growing with me, I will encourage your human capacity to know yourself in all of your multifaceted parts. And I will nurture your personal empowerment: your capacity to enact your will and self-love in your life,
within an awareness of respect for yourself, for others and for Earth.

I'm an eclectic, holistic, integrative counsellor & psychotherapist. I use approaches recognizing your whole self: you, as an earthling phenomenon, experiencing emotional, cognitive, behavioral, physical, social and spiritual aspects of being fully human.

More Info About My Practice

I offer affordable counselling & psychotherapy in a space which is wheelchair accessible and fragrance-free.

I'm certified professionally by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. This means that my credentials are accepted by many extended health care plans.

My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy

I believe the purpose of counselling is to help us resolve &/or change how we think, feel & behave about something happening in the present.

I believe the purpose of psychotherapy is to transform our historical pain &
unspeakable fears into compassion, kindness, strength & wisdom.

I also believe in the transformative power of the healing journey counselling &/or psychotherapy supports. I have made such journeys both personally & professionally, so I know how powerful they can be. And I know both personally & professionally, how relieved we can feel, when we are more at peace within our own skins, within our own stories, within our own experience of being human.

My View on the Nature of 'Disorders'

I'm a non-pathologizing counsellor & psychotherapist. This means that I don't perceive you automatically as disordered or ill.

I believe that most of our troubled functioning is caused by unresolved trauma in our narrative story, and most of our troubled coping mechanisms are attempts to care for ourselves, as best we can, with the skills we have developed, so far. Sometimes, our self-care attempts are harmful to ourselves & to others; sometimes we need new coping skills urgently. But for the most part, except for a few organic dysfunctions, I don't perceive troubled interaction (internally or externally) as pathological, nor treat it as such in my practice.

This doesn't mean that I reject wholesale the role pharmacological intervention can play. For some of us, pharmacological intervention makes the difference between death & life. For more of us, pharmacological intervention can help us temporarily to navigate a particularly painful piece of our life path. For most of us who are in confusion & pain, new learning can move us forward into greater peace & quiet within ourselves, between ourselves, and among ourselves.

If you come to see me to reconcile painful past experiences &/or learn about some new choices for your response repertoire, I will perceive you as a person who is looking for new information to inform new choices. I will respect the journey which has brought you to my door, even as we work to make the changes to which you are attracted.
