My Approach to Helping
I provide creative solutions to fit the unique needs and behaviors of each youth and family. Through our work together my clients are more equipped to manage anger, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, behavior challenges and more.
My approach is driven by three main principles: 1) speaking the language of youth; 2) engaging parents/caregivers and; 3) acceptance and inclusion. Youth communicate and process less through words and more through play, metaphor, and art--these are the modes in which youth problem solve, communicate daily experiences and express feelings. As an expressive arts therapist, utilizing the tools already at the disposal of children and teens allows for a more natural counseling experience. Each session is guided by the client's needs, abilities, age, and interest.
Engaging parents and/or caregivers is essential for a youth's progress in therapy. Based on what suits the family best, parents and/or caregivers choose to participate in the counseling process in a variety of ways including: family therapy, parent education, behavior monitoring, structured parent-child sessions and, psychoeducational resource consultations.
I believe that an environment of acceptance and inclusion assists all individuals' ability to thrive. A sense of belonging is essential for healing, growth, and progress to occur; my practice is committed to celebrating the unique attributes, characteristics, abilities, and perspectives of each individual.
