My Approach to Helping

I am a clinical psychologist and director of Dr. Maura Ferguson & Associates. I am committed to quality psychotherapy and training.

Meet Dr. Maura Ferguson, founder and director of Dr. Maura Ferguson & Associates. Board-certified in California and licensed by the College of Psychologists of Ontario, Dr. Ferguson earned her Doctorate (Psy.D) from the California Institute of Integral Studies. Her extensive clinical journey spans diverse landscapes, including community mental health, public health, addiction, private practice, and educational settings. Dr. Ferguson's experience honed in renowned institutions like Access Institute of San Francisco, the James Whitney Clinic at The Jung Institute of San Francisco, and UCSF and San Francisco Department of Public Health revolves around individuals and couples facing multifaceted challenges.

From issues of low self-worth, trauma, and grief to struggles with fertility, navigating life transitions, workplace stress, and relational complexities, she provides compassionate and collaborative care. Dr. Ferguson recognizes the importance of trust in the therapeutic relationship, understanding it as the cornerstone for safety, change, and healing. Rooted in psychoanalytic principles, her approach integrates evidence-based techniques, ensuring a dynamic and effective therapeutic journey for individuals and couples alike.

Maura advocates for therapists to embrace their vulnerability and well-being, a principle deeply embedded in her own training and doctoral program requirements. She believes that this introspection and self-awareness are essential to comprehending one's blind spots as a clinician fostering empathy, and navigating the nuances of vulnerability as a patient. Maura incorporates this wisdom into her practice, cultivating a non-judgmental space where genuine and open conversations flourish.

More Info About My Practice

The people we work with often find themselves grappling with symptoms of depression and anxiety, facing challenges in building and sustaining meaningful relationships—be it with family, friends, or romantic partners.
People often find emotions overwhelming. However, these emotions have the potential to be our teachers, helping us understand ourselves and the world better when we give them our focus.

By embracing all our emotions, even the uncomfortable ones, we can enhance our capacity to connect with others and become resilient when faced with challenges and change.

Those who have sought help in psychotherapy before may have encountered symptom-focused care that left some aspects unexplored. Our distinctive approach addresses the underlying causes, attachment styles and unconscious thoughts and feelings that contribute to mood disorder symptoms.

My Therapy Focus

Dr. Ferguson?s clinical work focuses on individuals and couples experiencing challenges related to low self-worth, trauma, grief, bereavement, anxiety, depression, isolation, transitions in life stages, identities, workplace stress and burnout, insecure attachment styles, and relational difficulties, including postpartum depression for all gender identities.
