Mental Health Statistics for San Diego

San Diego is the eighth most populous city in the U.S. It’s richly diverse, with more than 30% of residents identifying as Hispanic or Latino and nearly 17% as Asian. This underscores a massive estimated need for culturally competent therapy in the area.

Despite the fact San Diego has one of the highest numbers of homeless residents in the U.S., many of whom are veterans with mental health issues, the city has been ranked as one of the country’s best places to live.

Rates of mental illness and emotional disturbance in San Diego are on par with state and national averages. About 7.4% of residents under the age 18 have a serious emotional disturbance, and 6% of adults have a serious mental illness, according to data published by the California Health and Human Services Agency for San Diego County.

Illicit drug use in the San Diego-San Marcos-Carlsbad metropolitan area is 15.3%, with 11.6% having a diagnosable substance use disorder—higher than the state and national averages. Methamphetamine and heroin use and dependency are on the rise in San Diego, as are fatal prescription drug overdoses. Nearly a quarter of residents struggle with binge drinking.

The rate of depression in the same area is 4.8%, considerably lower than the state and national rates. Still, suicide is the second-leading cause of non-natural deaths in San Diego, outnumbering homicides by more than 2 to 1.
