My Approach to Helping

Depression is a parasite that feeds off your life, stealing your hope, motivation, and energy. But when you know how it works, you start to gain power over it, and hope starts to sprout again.

Coming from a human givens perspective, I'm solution-focused and emphasize meeting your primal human needs in healthy ways that make the most of your inherent strengths and resources. Because problems with rumination and restless sleep often form the basis of depression, my approach includes helping you relax, improve your sleep, and learn to deal with your daily stressors more effectively so that they don't make you anxious and restless. We'll also consider your lifestyle to ensure that your body is getting the nourishment and care it needs to support your mental health.

Some therapists will tell you therapy will make you feel worse before you feel better, but there's no reason it should be that way. By the end of our first session, you should be feeling relieved and hopeful. Once you've learned to relax and are sleeping better, future work will seem easier, and we can move on to discovering what isn't working in your life and what we can do about it. We'll collaborate to solve the problems we can and develop new perspectives on the things you can't control. We'll build your resilience and develop the resources and skills you need to start meeting your previously neglected needs so that the depression can't return.

My practice is fully online and available to adults anywhere in Texas, Sundays through Wednesdays. Please reach out if you're interested in a free, 15-minute consultation to see if we're a good fit.

More Info About My Practice

I became a therapist after 30+ years in a stressful career and my own journey of recovery and growth following a chronically traumatic childhood. The wisdom I've gained through personal experience gives me a deep understanding of how symptoms of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress develop and are maintained, as well as what works to eradicate them.

My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy

There are many benefits of psychotherapy: alleviating symptoms, managing stress, building resilience and confidence, discovering yourself, reaching your potential. But all of this and more can be summed up in one overarching goal: increasing freedom. Freedom is what I want for my clients, and my goal for every session is for you to leave feeling at least a little more free than you felt at the beginning.

Had a Negative Therapy Experience?

Have you ever felt disliked or shamed by a therapist because of who you are or what you believe? There is an unfortunate trend among the therapy professions in which some therapists view their work through an ideological lens and try to impose their personal beliefs on clients. My orientation toward clients is one of unconditional positive regard, and my practice is a judgment-free zone.
