My Approach to Therapy
Jonathan Olvera, MA, LPC, is a bilingual Licensed Professional Counselor in Dallas, TX specializing in couples counseling using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), trauma recovery using AEDP, and faith-based counseling for Christian individuals and couples. He offers in-person sessions in Dallas and secure online sessions throughout Texas.
Many couples come to Jonathan after months or years of the same fight, the same emotional distance, the same feeling that something important is slipping away. Others come after a betrayal that has broken the ground under their relationship. His work is not about giving communication tips. It is about identifying the deeper emotional patterns that keep couples stuck and helping them rebuild secure connection.
Jonathan is trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), one of only two couples therapy models classified as empirically supported by the American Psychological Association Division 12. Peer-reviewed outcome research on EFT reports a 70-75% recovery rate and a 90% significant-improvement rate among couples completing treatment (Johnson, 2019).
As a bilingual counselor fluent in English and Spanish, Jonathan works with Latino couples, English-Spanish mixed-language couples where each partner prefers a different language, and Spanish-primary clients who want therapy in their first language. He also integrates Christian faith as a resource for clients who request it, holding faith with respect rather than imposing a religious framework.
His work is especially well-suited for:
- Couples stuck in the same fight or the same emotional distance
- Partners rebuilding trust after infidelity or betrayal
- Adults recovering from relational trauma, church hurt, or childhood attachment wounds
- Bilingual Latino couples navigating acculturation stress, family expectations, and bicultural identity
- Christian couples and individuals seeking counseling that respects their faith while using evidence-based methods
- Ministry leaders and helping professionals experiencing burnout or personal-life fallout
Jonathan is currently accepting new clients. Couples sessions are 80 minutes and $225. Individual sessions are 50 minutes and $150. He is out-of-network with insurance but provides a superbill for reimbursement.
I work with couples and individuals who are tired of the same pattern repeating -- the same fight, the same shutdown, the same distance that never quite closes. My approach is relational and attachment-focused. I'm less interested in teaching you communication scripts and more interested in helping you understand what you're actually reaching for when things go wrong between you.
My primary framework is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), developed by Dr. Sue Johnson and backed by over 30 years of research. EFT has a documented 70-75% recovery rate for couples in distress. It works because it goes after the pattern underneath the conflict -- the attachment cycle that drives the fight, not just the fight itself. I also draw on AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy) when deeper individual trauma is shaping the relationship, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) for clients navigating complex internal landscapes.
For clients whose Christian faith is central to their life, I integrate a biblical framework into the therapeutic process. My MA in Biblical Counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary gives me genuine theological grounding -- not just a surface-level nod to faith. You don't have to choose between rigorous clinical care and a counselor who takes your faith seriously.
I am bilingual in English and Spanish. I work with Hispanic and Latino couples and individuals in both languages, with an understanding of the cultural context that therapy in a second language can't replicate.
Couples Counseling I specialize in couples dealing with recurring conflict, emotional distance, betrayal and infidelity, and the slow erosion of connection that builds up when wounds go unaddressed. I also offer premarital counseling for engaged couples who want to build a strong foundation before marriage.
Trauma Recovery I work with individuals and couples carrying relational trauma, betrayal trauma, complex PTSD, developmental wounds, and grief. Many of the patterns that show up in relationships -- withdrawing, over-pursuing, numbing, exploding -- are trauma adaptations. Understanding them changes everything.
Faith-Based Counseling For clients in the Dallas Christian community -- including church leaders, ministry workers, and people navigating spiritual wounds alongside relational ones -- I offer counseling that holds both clinical rigor and biblical depth simultaneously.
Bilingual Therapy in English and Spanish I offer full sessions in English, full sessions in Spanish, or sessions that move between both. Healing happens in the language of your emotions.
Couples sessions (80 minutes): $225 Individual sessions (50 minutes): $150 Free 20-minute consultation available before scheduling.
I am a private pay, out-of-network provider. A Good Faith Estimate is provided before services begin, as required by the No Surprises Act. Some clients are reimbursed by their insurance as an out-of-network benefit -- I recommend checking with your insurance provider.
