My Approach to Helping
Dr. Karen Quek, an Experienced Mental Healthcare Professional with a Doctor of Philosophy – PhD focused in Marital and Family Therapy from Loma Linda University, is a dual licensed couple and family therapist and professional clinical counselor. My professional goal is to help you empower self and to move on in new directions from your hurtful past and to create enriching relationships. I work from a family systemic perspective. I provide therapy personalized to your unique relational needs. Collaboratively, we will look to the current and past relational, familial and cultural contexts of your life to examine your strengths as well as your relational impasse. We will work towards developing a therapeutic alliance where you can feel safe to express your thoughts and feelings and to further examine what is holding you back from living life more fully.
I have an extensive clinical and supervisory experiences for over 20 years. I have worked in various mental health settings including non-profit organizations, educational institutions, churches and private practice. I appreciate and respect cultural diversity. My clinical experience and innovative research reflect my expertise and interests in individuals, couples and family from cross-cultural background. These have resulted in numerous publications and research presentations, including 2 published books, “Transition and Change in Collectivist Family Life: Strategies for Clinical Practice with Asian Americans” and “Intersectionality in Family Therapy Leaderships: Professional Power, Personal Identities.”
