My Approach to Helping

"Believing the judgments; too many obligations?" "Are you resisting what's here, feeling numb?" "Expected to roll over?" "Internal dialogue, unhelpful self talk?" I am a licensed psychotherapist, serving adults for 25+ years.

My approach draws on psychoanalytic thinking, which revolves on one central idea: much of what we think and feel remains outside of our awareness. Sometimes we keep powerful feelings hidden so we can continue moving through the day, or we simply cannot find time to reflect on everything that is happening to us. In any case, keeping these potent experiences hidden may leave us feeling stiff, dreary, unfulfilled, or even numb and dull.

Together we will gently, yet firmly, uncover the distant thoughts and feelings that leave us wondering “how did we get here?” Through this uncovering, we begin to feel cohesive, content, and liberated as these parts of ourselves finally come together.

For therapy to be effective, the person must feel emotionally secure with the therapist as well as have confidence in her ability. Ultimately, this matters more than the therapist's orientation.

Is there anything required of me for counseling? How long do I have to attend?

Therapy requires a commitment of time, energy, and coins. Therefore, you should be very careful about the therapist you select. Therapy isn't something you can attend once and expect maximum results. Most therapy requires a minimum of three months or 12 sessions to see maximum results; however, a recommendation will be made for you specific to your issues.

Second, it requires a commitment of work & effort. Clients who are involved in and take responsibility for their treatment experience a better outcome than those who show little to no effort.

Third, it takes a commitment of time and internal resources.

MAJOR GOAL OF THERAPY

Metta Counseling Services uses multiple approaches to therapy and your sessions go with the flow of your needs and unique individual personality. We invite you to feel comfortable being yourself in a safe accepting therapeutic setting, actively participating in your wellness.

The Metta Counseling Services strives to create an open, empathetic environment. Psychotherapy can open up new avenues to live life more fully. Effortful life experiences can lead to emotional knots and behaviors that are often not in a person’s best interest.
I believe creating a meaningful therapeutic relationship, where you can feel safe and free to explore, is essential to understanding and loosening the knots, liberating you to make better choices and live a more meaningful life. As a result, a high percentage of our business is from "word of mouth" referrals.

My Approach to Helping

People heal, change or come to terms with things when they cultivate a healthy internal voice that can guide them through challenges of the past, present or time ahead.

As a result of working together, you'll learn to develop more satisfying emotional relationships, navigate life transitions, and clarify your wants and desires. You'll explore what's most important to you and identify what you would like to see different in your future. I'll encourage you to take a closer look at your life today and to identify how themes and patterns of the past may be getting in your way. Isn't it time to live your life to its fullest?

Practice Description
I see my clients once a week or every other week, depending on your needs. My office is attractive and comfortable and parking is available. Sessions are 50 minutes except for the first session which sometimes goes longer. I like to be paid at each session and I will give you a statement at the end of each session, if you want one, which you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

As we go through life, we accumulate experiences that shape us and our world view. Usually, we are not even aware of the effect these experiences have on us. Psychotherapy provides a place to unpack and review life experiences in a safe environment with an eye to personal growth.

Why did I act the way I did? What was I feeling at the time? Could we have acted differently? Could I do something different now?
By understanding our core motivations, we can make choices to continue to act in accordance with them, or to change them.

My clinical work is guided by a personality based dynamic understanding in which the focus is more on the here and now than on the past. The aim of the therapy is to bring awareness to underlying feelings, conflicts and self-defeating patterns that impede one’s growth. I work collaboratively to enhance a sense of agency, relieve symptoms and to internally free the person so they can know clearly what they want, and how they feel and what they want to do. When clinically indicated, I also draw on cognitive behavioral, and mindfulness approaches to help patients find relief from negative thoughts and overwhelming feelings that they are unable to manage effectively.

Using this understanding, clients are encouraged to choose paths that foster new growth.
