My Approach to Helping
I offer a safe and supportive environment to help you identify and resolve unhealthy patterns that keep you from moving forward. You might be feeling stuck due to becoming emotionally disconnected with your partner, experiencing a traumatic event or struggling to perform at your optimal level at work. You want to rediscover intimacy, purpose and joy. Let me join you in developing effective coping skills to manage life\'s daily challenges.
I am experienced in trauma, relational conflicts as well as depression and anxiety. My approach is experiential, process-oriented and focuses on bringing greater insight and self-awareness for the client(s). I believe in the importance of early childhood experiences, attachments, and memories that inform our present selves.
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT). I am trained in Trauma-focused CBT and EMDR. I enjoy working with adolescents and young adults as well as couples who are just starting out and looking to build a solid foundation. I look forward to meeting and partnering with you.
More Info About My Practice
Our work together will be centered around your strengths and your story of how you came to be who you are now. We will discuss what’s important to you, what you want changed and how I can walk beside you in that process. Each client is different, so treatment should naturally be tailored to meet your needs and concerns. Some clients will want to learn specific self soothing skills while others are interested in finding out what they want and who they want to be in their marriage. Whatever the need is, we will work hard to bring forward greater understanding and awareness of why you think, feel and behave in the way you do. We will also get curious about the parts that were shaped early on by your formative experiences as what you learned from your family of origin often informs how you operate now as a person and in relationships.
Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist
I believe that therapy is about seeing you first as a person and then getting to know the problems you experience. I believe strongly in creating a non judgmental space where you can explore options in your life that may be very different from my own personal beliefs. I also believe in creating an inclusive and accepting environment where your views, values and story can be received in a safe and non pathologizing way. I am cantonese, born in Hong Kong and have a unique experience of being a minority in Canada as well as the United States. I can readily identify with the struggles of immigrating to a new country as a child and can empathize with the tension between acculturation and assimilation. I believe in empowering people who feel like they lack a voice and want to help you find yours. If this resonates with you, I would love to work together.
