Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
Women's Therapy: Discover your best self...
I love working with courageous women who value self-exploration and who are open to creating lasting change in their life. It brings me absolute joy seeing women who are struggling with anxiety and shame find peace with being their authentic selves. When we work together, I want you to feel fully understood and heard. During therapy I offer new insights, support, motivate, and challenge when needed. I am filled with compassion and conviction to guide women toward a life you wholeheartedly love. You are deserving and worthy of change in your life. I would be thrilled to take this journey of self-discovery with you.
Premarital Therapy: If you're ready to say "I do"!...
Premarital Therapy is a pivotal investment with personal and relationship benefits that will last far beyond your wedding day. I provide engaged and dating couples with essential relationship tools that will be important to your marriage. Our time together is customized to your unique relationship needs and my training as a Prepare-Enrich Facilitator provides you with additional relationship exercises and resources to gain the most from our time together. One of the many things that I enjoy about working with premarital couples is that I get to witness your relationship as you prepare for an exciting transition. I would be honored to assist you with preparing for your future.
Pet Loss: You're not alone...
I want you to know that your loss is important. Based on years of experience working with animals at vet clinics and animal shelters and being a pet owner myself, I have a tremendous amount of compassion for both animals and their owners. I offer a supportive therapy environment for you to process your grief.
Committed Couples: If your relationship is in need of a check up...
It is all too easy for couples to feel the strain of focusing so much of their time and energy on work, raising children, household responsibilities, and hobbies to the point that they begin to emotionally drift in their marriage. I love to help highly committed couples remember the heart of what brought them together, establish more effective communication patterns, learn how to have fun together again, feel more emotionally connected to their partner, and get excited about planning for their future.
What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist
My love for therapy began during high school when a Psychologist visited my Psychology class. I had always been fascinated with understanding emotions and relationships and had now found a career where I could explore both! I knew from that moment that I wanted to gain every bit of knowledge I could to pursue my dream of becoming a therapist. I have spent the last seventeen years growing my love and knowledge for therapy. I joyfully opened my private practice doors in downtown Overland Park, Kansas in 2010 so that I could share my gifts with courageous women and committed couples who are open to creating positive changes in their life. It would be my privilege to work with you!
My Role as a Therapist
I'm Afton, a Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist passionate about collaborating
with highly committed women and couples to reach their personal goals. My therapeutic style
is reflective of who I hope to be-authentic, compassionate, and humble. I believe there are
times when humor naturally comes into therapy work as well which can feel like a breath of fresh air in the heaviness that life can bring.
It is likely that you might find our work together to be both challenging and extremely
rewarding. I consider it my absolute privilege to be invited into your self growth and therefore
consider the therapy room to be a sacred space. I strive to uphold a safe, accepting, inviting,
and confidential place for you.
My goal is to provide you with a unique therapy experience that allows you to exceed your
therapy goals and discover the heart of the issue to create lasting change in your life. I love the
entire therapy process from the moment someone walks into my door until they reach their goals
and we have a closing session. It brings me the sincerest joy to witness an individual or
relationship experience transformation.
Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist
Who I am and how I conduct therapy won't look the same as the next person. I believe that the personality and care therapists provide is as unique as the people we see. Therapists often have different backgrounds when it comes to their training and license, experience level, specialties, therapy treatment approach, and personalities. I can appreciate how overwhelming finding the right therapist can be so I want to make this process as easy as possible for you. That is why I offer a free phone consultation so that we can make sure that I'm the right fit for you.
The Duration and Frequency of Therapy
The timeline for therapy is unique to each client. Individuals come to therapy with varying presenting problems, differing levels of motivation and commitment to therapy work, and have individualized comfort levels when it comes to connecting with their therapist. I can do my best to provide the best possible estimate after I have the opportunity to meet you and learn more about your goals for therapy. Our initial session is a 60 minute consultation and then the typical structure for therapy is to meet weekly for 50 minutes. I offer some flexibility about session frequency based on your needs and where you are at in your therapy process.
