My Approach to Helping

"I'm at a point professionally where I can say I'm genuinely fond of all my clients; even though they are all so different. They do have some characteristics in common, however. Usually, they are very curious. They have an interest in finding out the truth about themselves and the world in which they live. Another common characteristic my clients share is a commitment to change. They realize that to feel safe with another human being -- a psychotherapist like myself -- takes more than a few months and more than that to achieve a fundamental shift in outlook.I started out doing "talk therapy" and, indeed, I continue to engage my clients in what are hopefully very productive dialogues. Recently, however, I have begun working with clients using other disciplines such as EMDR and Internal Family Systems when it appears that we are getting stuck with "talk therapy." Long after they have forgotten some particular detail about their lives that detail's still very fresh with me. I guess I would say I'm inherently nosy about what makes people tick."
