More Info About My Practice
After working almost a decade in a school setting, I have gained extensive experience working with adolescents and their families concerning a variety of issues. My goal is to help families improve communication, navigate the challenges of adolescence and develop healthy structure and boundaries at home. Adolescence can be a time of disconnect, frustration, and confusion and it is my hope to help families find new ways to grow and connect during this major life transition.
Therapy is a valuable tool for anyone looking to improve their quality of life, strengthen important relationships, and navigate challenging times or situations. If you are here, you are taking the first step to a happier, healthier life and I would love to be a part of that journey.
I am owner of Family Therapy Center of Bethesda, LLC.
On the Fence About Going to Therapy?
There is a major misconception that therapy is only for people who are suffering from a severe mental or emotional illness. However, therapy is actually a valuable resource for any and all individuals who are feeling stuck or unhappy in their lives. It is a great place to get support or guidance in getting through life transitions, or challenges. Therapy can also be a place to work on yourself and relationships. Therapy truly can be beneficial for everyone!
Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist
Most people are not sure what to expect or what to look for when seeking a therapist. Therapists come from different educational backgrounds, hold different licenses, and boast different skill sets and it can be overwhelming trying to decide which therapist will suite your needs. While each profession has its strengths, research has shown that Marriage and Family Therapy is can be more effective than other individual treatments. So what makes Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) stand out? MFTs take a holistic approach and have specialized training in working with couples and families. As individuals, we do not live in a vacuum and thus our problems exist in the context of our relationships. Marriage and Family Therapists are trained in family systems and are licensed to diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders within the context of couple and family relationships. But, regardless of which therapist you choose, here are some universal do's and don'ts to look out for.
Therapist should spend time building rapport.
Therapist challenges each person about their contributions to the problems and about their ability to make positive changes to resolve the problem.
Therapist is active in structuring the session.
Therapist offers strategies for change.
Therapist is collaborative and supportive.
Therapist should not take sides.
Therapist does not allow for repeated unhealthy exchanges during sessions.
The therapist does not impose their values on you.
Also, remember, therapy is very personal and it is important to find a therapist who is a good match for you. Don't be afraid to shop around until you find a therapist whose approach and personality fits for you.
