I believe that people have within themselves the means to solve their problems, heal themselves, and grow beyond traumatic histories, biologically based mental health issues, chronic medical issues, or just life stress. As a therapist, my job is to help people look at their lives differently, help them identify thoughts and behaviors that are no longer helpful, and provide an opportunity for new experiences and a more realistic (and less harsh) view of themselves. Although people come into therapy because of problems and emotional pain, identifying their strengths and successes in life is an important part of the solution.

These new ways of thinking and behaving can lead people to see the possibilities within themselves and their lives. People do not live in isolation and their current issues are often connected to their family system, social network, job, and even their culture and environment. Even if those systems are not in the therapy room, they can have a profound impact on one's emotional well being and at least need to be acknowledged and often times need to be addressed.

We cannot ignore prejudice in the world, an unsafe environment, a stressful midnight shift, or difficult family members. I give homework outside of sessions so that people continue to work on change even outside of the session where they need it most. My goal is to help people find the tools they need to improve their lives on their own so they no longer need me.

More Info About My Practice

I participate with some health insurances such as BCBS, medicare, Aetna, and Tri-Care. If I do not participate, I will give you the information you need to bill your insurance company. I am in the office Monday through Friday, and work late 2-3 nights a week and some Saturdays.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I have a great deal of experience working with divorced and remarried family systems and the struggles that surround them. Divorce can be a very traumatic life event and it disrupts the normal family life cycle. It is easy to get stuck in the anger and pain of divorce if it is not addressed in a healthy manner. Re-marriage, especially with children, can be a difficult transition, but with a little guidance in the beginning, the new roles of the family members can be clarified to avoid misunderstanding and resentment.

I also work with young adults going off to college and beginning their new lives. Leaving home is a difficult transition requiring greater independence, self-regulation, and self exploration. It can be a time of uncertainty and sometimes anxiety and depression which might result in a return home if not addressed. Young adults may need to explore some of these issues in therapy rather than with their parents from whom they are attempting to separate. It can be an exciting time of growth and exploration.

I work with families with children experiencing a variety of issues including anxiety and depression, but I also test and work with gifted children who experience their own stress and struggles in life. I see the entire family, although I may see the child alone, the parents alone, and everyone together to help address the issues.

My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy

I believe the purpose of therapy is to help people find the tools to solve their problems, enhance their lives, feel better about themselves, and reach their goals. Hopefully they will not only solve one problem, but learn how to approach other problems as well. Once they reach these goals or believe they are on their way, therapy is complete.

Sometimes therapy is not about problems, but about fulfilling ones's potential and finding possibilities in life. This type of therapy focuses more on where a person wants to go in their life and how to get there.
